In Feb of 2020, Mythic Quest's first episode dropped on Apple TV+. A few months later, I found myself turning to streaming services that weren't Netflix or Hulu. Fifty-fifty so, finding fresh fare during the pandemic proved tricky. Not simply because streamers were generally eking out content slowly — or delaying shows and movies altogether — but also because starting something new felt daunting.
Some days, getting caught upward in a new world feels exciting. But, like many other TV marathoners, I found myself rewatching "comfort shows" last summertime. Familiar characters, stories, worlds and jokes provided some kind of certainty at a time that felt divers by the unknown. But even that chicken-soup-predictability of comedies past wore sparse. And then, in the all-out egg warfare that led upward to "Bunny Solar day," fifty-fifty Animal Crossing: New Horizons started to feel like work — non escapism.
Luckily, my Apple TV+ subscription — which, originally, I'd caved to purchasing for the sake of Dickinsonand The Servant— was still live and well. Apple's streamer emphasizes quality over quantity. And Mythic Questis yet some other show that illustrates this somewhat-novel streaming wars game plan. In fact, the show's near-perfect blend of sharp (even so oddball) one-act and sudden poignancy makes this hidden gem shine brighter than most. Similar that friend y'all've simply met, but feel you've known for years.
So, What'southward "Mythic Quest" Almost?

Equally mentioned earlier, at that place's a lot to love about Mythic Quest. Besides its connections to classics like Customs and It's E'er Sunny, 2 specifics convinced me to hitting play on the pilot. For starters, as a gamer I was drawn to the workplace backdrop — the in-jokes and nuance.

While my excitement around video game-centric content pulled me into Mythic Questinitially, I'd nonetheless pitch it to non-gamers and coincidental fans as well. The series never gets bogged down in industry minutia or technical jargon — even Nicdao noted that she wasn't a gamer before acting in season one, but feels that the show transcends its setting and is "nearly a dysfunctional establish family" (via Uproxx). It'southward prophylactic to say that much of the evidence'southward appeal comes from its universality, and not in a cheesy way either.
"We never want to exist the kind of show that'south, similar, moralistically wagging our finger at the audition," Nicdao told Uproxx in an interview. But, in the same breath, Nicdao points to a season-2 scene wherein Ian and Poppy care for the art section terribly, noting that the audience isn't supposed to be on the stars' side.
Whether Mythic Quest's insightful social commentary is shedding a light on industry issues, like crisis and burnout; or illustrating how women, people of colour, and queer folks have to navigate the workplace, information technology does so with a existent honesty. In fact, Mythic Quest'southward inclusivity feels equally natural equally its comedy. You can tell that the testify was fabricated by — and for — people who might see themselves reflected in the characters on screen. And, in terms of Television representation, that makes a world of difference.
As Nicdao pointed out, the show centers on a type of chosen family, and peradventure null illustrates that notion better than the prove's "Quarantine" episode, which striking Apple Television+ on the heels of the flavor i finale.
